Te Ngaru Māori - Wellington Māori Surf Champs celebrates the rich cultural heritage of Māori surfing during Matariki, the Māori New Year. Hosted by Wellington Boardriders at Lyall Bay on June 19, 20, or 21, 2025,
This event will bring together surfers from across Aotearoa in an iwi-based team format, inspired by the Backdoor Shootout. It's more than just a competition. it's a vibrant gathering that will foster community connections and inspire both young and seasoned surfers to embrace cultural identity through the exhilarating sport of surfing.
Join us for the inaugural Te Ngaru Māori Surf Competition happening during Matariki on June 21st, where competitors join forces with their iwi to ride the waves and score the ultimate victory. Register as yourself on LiveHeats (Link below) and we'll place you in a team when the entries close and will let you know. On Wednesday 18th we'll update everyone on conditions and whether we can go ahead and location, TBay or Lyall.
